Restylane® is a form of facial plastic surgery. It was first used more than 10 years ago and has been used in more than 10 million treatments worldwide. Restylane® was the first FDA approved filler for lip enhancement. It works by adding volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and can be placed by your cosmetic doctor.
Restylane® also works to add fullness to the lips and provides natural looking results with just one treatment. Restylane® patients continue to see results for up to 18 months after treatment in their laugh lines and up to six months in the lips.
How it Works
Restylane® is a unique formulation of hyaluronic acid that helps maintain full lips and erase laugh lines around the mouth. It works by stretching fibroblasts, the cells in the skin that make collagen, in a way that causes the skin to create new collagen. New, natural collagen then decreases the appearance of severe laugh lines and plumps the lips.
Results from this facial plastic surgery procedure can be seen immediately after treatment!
The Restylane® Procedure
A Restylane® treatment takes only about one hour for your cosmetic doctor to complete. We will first clean and prepare the area to be treated. The Restylane® product is then injected into the treatment areas using an ultra-fine needle. Discomfort during the procedure is typically minimal and mild pain is common after treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Will the procedure hurt?
Answer: The procedure itself is minimally invasive and usually causes little pain. After treatment, you may experience some mild pain or discomfort that typically lasts less than seven days in the smile lines and 14 days in the lips. Swelling is common in patients under 35 years of age and some bruising is normal in patients older than 35. Using a cold compress will help to relieve these symptoms.
Question: Is there anything I should tell my doctor about before I begin treatments?
Answer: Yes. It is important to tell your cosmetic doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding, or have serious allergies or bleeding disorders. You should also inform us if you suffer from facial cold sores.
Question: How often will I need to be treated to maintain results?
Answer: Results have been shown to last up to 18 months in laugh lines and up to six in the lips. Follow up appointments should be made at the nine month mark in laugh line patients and three months in lip patients to maximize results.
Question: Can Restylane® treatments be done on other parts of my face than just my laugh lines and mouth?
Answer: Restylane® is only approved to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth, laugh lines, upper lip, lower lip, corners of the mouth, and the marionette lines, which are the areas from the corners of the mouth to the jawline.
